The time-resolved in-situ Quick-XAS investigation provides quant. information on supported phases formed during thermal activation of silica-supported cobalt catalysts for the Fischer-tropsch reaction, in terms of structure and phases, as well as temperature, rate of formation, and decomposition The rapid formation of cobalt(II) hydroxynitrates when the activation takes place in diluted NO is explained by a reaction between partly hydrated cobalt(II) nitrate and NO at <100.degree.. The hydroxynitrate decomposition starts progressively at 110-170.degree. and leads to the formation of oxide nuclei which contribute to enhancement of metal oxide dispersion in the supported catalysts.
