Alpha-clustering vs giant E2 excitations in oxygen-16

Hecht, K. T.

Journal of the Physical Society of Japan (1978), 44(Suppl.), 232-5 CODEN: JUPSAU; ISSN: 0031-9015. English.

The [.alpha. + 12C]-cluster model basis for 16O is compared with band systems gnerated by the infinitesimal operators of the noncompact group Sp(6,R), or more specifically its subgroup Sp(2,R) which generates SU(3) ladders s(.lambda.0.mu.0) (.lambda.0 + 2, .mu.0) (.lambda.0 + 4, .mu.0)...based on np-nh states of the largest possible intrinsic deformation, with n = 0,..., 5. Although the overlaps between the 1st sympletic excitations (essentially giant E2 excitations) and the corresponding .alpha.-cluster states range from 0.808 to 0.872, the higher symplectic excitations differ by more from the .alpha.-cluster states of t same (.lambda..mu.). The .alpha.-cluster and symplectic excitations thus give a complementary description of core excitations in 16O.
